This booklet was written in 1833 with the aim to persuade those who engage in the Great American Game of “Draw Poker” to play only for entertainment and recreation and to expose the people in the clubs and social card parties who are deceitful or cheat. When gambling was at its peak, this work attempted to illustrate to the American youth the dangers that await them while playing this engrossing game. The pamphlet shows the bright as well as the dark side of the game, regarding it as an “expensive recreation.” It emphasizes the dark side of the game more firmly, warning the youth to play it mindfully. The use of powerful language by the author in this text leaves a long-lasting impact on the reader.
